I’m encountering some hiccups with the Smashwords site. I finally got my story elevated to Premium status—simple matter of following their style guide—but then I was reading my own story on my e-reader and I found a few errors I wanted to clean up.
I fixed them easily enough and went to reupload the story, but then there was a couple problems I don’t entirely understand. Their “Meatgrinder” program—the program that converts the Word doc into all other e-reader formats—didn’t work this time. I uploaded the revision several more times, and my priority got kicked down further and further, until there was no recourse but to let it run overnight and hope for the best in the morning.
I e-mailed the tech support and she admitted there was a problem with Meatgrinder, but it should be working if I wanted to try it again. I did, and the revision seems to be uploaded (and therefore downloadable: please buy a copy!), but I have a “needs submission” alert attached to the story. I don’t even know if anyone else can see it listed anymore, whether on Barnes & Noble, iTunes, or even Smashwords.
I’m sure this isn’t a common experience, but it’s a little discouraging. I’m trying my first foray into self-publication and encountering a street lined with little bumps and obstructions. I hope it clears up soon, and I would love it if people showed a little interest in my first short story.
