Summer Reading: “Holiday Bonus”

Holiday Bonus Big things are afoot around… no, that’s an awful pun.

Smashwords is having their 8th Annual Summer/Winter Sale (summer in the northern hemisphere; winter in the southern), and they’re asking their authors to participate in the promotional event. Get people reading on the beach, or what used to be a beach but is not an arctic wasteland, covered in ice. Wherever people like to read.

To that end, I’ve uploaded a new story. In “Holiday Bonus“, Helen King is reluctantly dragging herself to her office’s annual holiday party. She hates these events because it’s just a bunch of drunken social disasters and office politics, but beyond that, it just reminds her how old she’s gotten. She’d rather stay home, get drunk with her cats, and let the season pass in ignominy. Yet at the party she strikes up a conversation with a pleasant young man, Jerry Clary, and they proceed to get drunk together and slag their workplace. What rounds the evening out, however, is their nightcap: a mysterious drink provided by an equally mysterious bartender. By this they both get deliriously tipsy, but Jerry also shrinks down to the size of a small doll… and Helen gets ideas.

Am I Being Pirated?

I self-publish my work through Smashwords, and they farm my short stories out to other retailers like Barnes & Noble, iTunes, Scribd, and others. That is known.

What’s unknown is who else is an authorized dealer. Today I was trying to figure out how to get into my Google Books account, since they’ve revised the site, in case I need to delete a title or upload a new one. Instead, I found my short stories for sale on a Netherlands URL (and at a discount, no less).

Updates, Updates for All

Life throws you a curve, and all you can do is make baseball-ade.

I was writing pretty steadily when I was unemployed, and it’s great to have a full-time job once again, but I haven’t done any creative writing in months. I miss that and I feel terrible about not sitting down and making the effort. I thought I’d try that today.

Except recently I upgraded my writin’ laptop to Windows 10 (I’d been running Win7 and avoided Win8 like the plague), and while it seems to make some thing simpler, it needs a lot of time to load, update, settle, reload, reupdate and get resettled, over and over again. Every time I think it’s done, my processing grinds to a halt and I see System is absorbing all my CPU, Memory and Disk space. And today my laptop threatened to not let me into it because I couldn’t remember my password. I’ve never had a password for this laptop, that’s what was throwing me off, but after enough wrong tries it announced it needed my MSN password. I looked that up and got in, averting disaster.

Newer Opportunities

Google has recanted its pro-censorship policy, after hearing the protest from its legacy users. That’s good, but I’d still like to find an online home where I don’t have to worry about such things.

In other news, I’ve successfully sold a couple stories over Google Play Books. Please check me out there if you’re so inclined.

As well, I’ve started a new account with All Romance eBooks, and I’m very excited about this as well. I hope it exposes my work to a new audience (and that they receive me positively).

As always I can be found on Smashwords, which farms me out to Barnes & Noble for prestige. All that’s left… is for me to start receiving feedback from my readers. I would love to know what people think of my stories, and I’d value hearing what they’d like to see in the future. Maybe my next online home will facilitate conversations with the people who are reading me.

More ePub Markets

I’m exploring other online sites for e-publishing, just because I haven’t. I’ve put all my eggs in Smashwords’ basket but there are other venues for free self-publication.

For instance, I’ve uploaded my stories to Google Books. It makes no difference to me whether readers purchase from Smashwords, Barnes & Noble or Google Play. It is my hope that new readers will find me on new channels, however.

I decided to skip uploading to Amazon, since they have a policy of forbidding you from posting anywhere else. And while it sounds like they have a robust distribution program, I’ve already started elsewhere. I would need convincing evidence that Amazon would yield a better audience than everywhere else I’m marketing, in aggregate.

As for AllRomance, I’m waiting to hear back from them. They’re very professional, they take themselves very seriously. They have an actual acceptance process, whereas you only need to validate your email anywhere else. I hope they have a good audience for giantess/shrink fantasy stories.

Lastly, I’ve written a second episode in a strange tale: The Tiny Scrubbing Bubble. I started this five years ago, apparently, and despite people clamoring for more I completely abandoned it. Well, tonight I showed up at my coffee shop at 2 p.m. and didn’t leave until 7 p.m., after I wrapped up a complete chapter in this story. That was my goal and I’m pleased to have fulfilled it.

Whole Lotta Writin’ Goin’ On

It’s so funny. November 2013 I plowed my way through Fundamental Allure for NaNoWriMo, and I wrote out the complete work. It was rough and uncooperative, parts of it repeated and other parts contradicted itself, but all the material was there.

Over the next dozen months I slowly picked at it, cleaned up parts at my leisure. Eventually I rewrote it, lost the rewrite and rewrote it again. Then I rewrote it a couple more times out of intense frustration until I finally hit my stride and created a version I really liked.

After another few months I finished it off, reviewed it on my e-reader, read it aloud and made the last tweaks before uploading it. Now Fundamental Allure is available online for sale. Please check it out and let me know what you think.

While promoting this I returned to the Giantess World forum and read through some user challenges. I picked out three I liked and wrote up some plot ideas. I worked on one yesterday afternoon and hammered away at it until one in the morning, then woke up and went straight back to it, completing it this afternoon. Please also read The Lords of the Ternakan.

And know that it took me 14 months to write a 30,000-word story and half a day to crank out a complete, 18,000-word story. Sometimes I just do not understand myself.

Finally, a New Story

I actually have some news to share here.

I’ve been silent, but I haven’t been motionless. I’ve been working on longer stories in my privacy, and one of them is finally ready to go. After a year and a few months, my story Fundamental Allure is undergoing final review and will be uploaded soon.

Are you excited? I am—this has taken forever. I cranked it out Nov. ’13 during NaNoWriMo, and I spent the next year editing it, on and off. Luckily, I recently lost my job and have had plenty of time to focus on Fundamental Allure, and 30,000 words later, it’s complete. It’s undergone five rewritings, which is a lot, and now I think it looks the way I want it to.

I’m rereading it now, both on my mobile device and by reading it aloud, and when I’m done with the last few tweaks, I’m going to subject it to the Smashwords style guide. Once it passes this, it goes online and for sale there, and once Smashwords approves it, they’ll distribute it elsewhere, too.

So get ready. Fundamental Allure is about a stupid man who cheated on the best girlfriend he ever had. Once he finally attains a pill that will actually shrink him down, he’s got to win her back and live out his heart’s greatest fantasy with her. He doesn’t consider that she may have plans for him as well, of course, because what kind of story would this be if everything ran smoothly?
